Hey guys! So my favourite new discovery, The Howl & The Hum, have finally released their first single online and as if this wasn’t exciting enough, it happens to be my absolute favourite song that I’ve heard them play. I first heard these lads support ‘Heir’ at The Wardrobe last year and was so astounded by their sheer talent that within weeks I found myself buying a ticket just to see their set at Fibbers in York. I have been completely obsessed since.
Genuinely the best new band I have seen live.
Godmanchester Chinese Bridge opens with what sounds like an old broken tape before the introduction of eerie guitar parts which envelope you in overwhelming emotion and sense of nostalgia. Frontman Sam Griffiths has a voice that I have honestly never heard in any other modern vocalist, yet he manages to maintain an aura of complete warmth and effortlessness. When I’ve seen this song performed, the thing that stood out the most was the way that each of the four members bring together their individual parts to form a wall of pure, unrelenting feeling that literally smacks you in the face leaving the hair on your arms and on the back of your neck stood on end.
With lyrics that parallel to a heart to heart exchanged between two old lovers, you can’t help but be dragged into a heart-breaking, raw and very real experience that this quartet are choosing to share with you. The structure of the song allows you on a journey, guiding you through its ambivalence and intimacy before it reaches its climax and ends all too soon. This is actually something that had irritated me because I never wanted it to end, however the more that I’ve listened, the more I’ve realised that by ending so soon, it drops you at its most vulnerable moment abandoning you as you’re left completely unsatisfied (in the best way).
Godmanchester Chinese Bridge is an incredibly evocative, nostalgic and melancholic song that leaves you missing someone you never even met.

Hey, It’s 2 am here and I heard this song for the very first time (the band, also) and it left me with such emptiness that I couldn’t help myself looking for a review of this masterpiece. What I am trying to say it’s Thank You, for writing this and putting into words a close meaning of this song. I wasn’t the only one after all.. Do not stop writing.
